005 - Hourglass
All things, arguably, in the natural world exist in time. But how many things actually track and record time? Do we track time for our own sanity, in order to meet our own goals, or to share a story for present and future generations? Do we assign, or even invent time periods for the past as well? The hand could continue to exist without turning the timer, the timer can continue to exist without being turned. So then, how could one calendar, that is dependent on another calendar resume without the physical act of recording the base or origin time? Do we need more hands? Should each timer require a hand? Do we all have our timers that we reset? Our to-do lists, our epochs, our lifetimes, our chores, our events, so many of these are tracked in time. Think of all the things we do that have a beginning, a middle, an end and so on.
Assume each human has a timer that they reset, and this timer could influence or drive the reset of other timers. In this instance we see just three timers, but there could be an infinite number of timers. The metaphor for resetting the clock, the hand, could represent a piece of art, literature, spoken word, music, the built environment, our jobs, our interactions, our very thoughts. For me, this piece cautions the time keeper to be mindful of the interdependence of perceived times. Be gentle when keeping track of time for it is surely interwoven with multiple other timers of our own, of others, and of society.
Everyday in the crypto world we see hundreds, or thousands of new tokens, new timepieces. Some are completely dependent on others, some exist independently, some deflationary, some inflationary, and each created with some intention or purpose. Each is a record of time that is not calculated by the celestial, but rather by the complete history of transactions. The hand, the glass, the sand, the transaction, all of this is the blockchain. The fifth piece in the NFT collection is “Hourglass”, a study on the interdependence of seemingly separate perceptions of time. This NFT is uniquely sold on an open auction that will not end for nearly 10 years after this release, you can bid on it here.
